Description of Flow Field The flow field simulated are four kinds of decaying homogeneous anisotropic turbulence with a constant mean temperature gradient(Cases 1-4). In all cases, RS_11 is equal to RS_22, and the Reynolds shear stress is negligible if compared to the normal components of the Reynolds stress tennsor. In Case 1, RS_11 is larger than RS_33, and a mean temperature gradient is imposed in the y direction. In Case 2, the velocity field is the same as in Case 1. A mean temperature gradient is imposed in the z direction. In Case 3, RS_11 is smaller than RS_33, and a mean temperature gradient is imposed in the y direction. In Case 4, the velocity field is the same as in Case 3. A mean temperature gradient is imposed in the z direction. 2. Numerical Method Governing equations: three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations (rotational form), continuity equation and energy conservation equation. Discretization method: spectral method = 96 x 96 x 96 Fourier modes. Aliasing treatment: nonlinear terms computed with collocation grids 1.5 times finer in each direction. Time integration: second-order Adams-Bashforth scheme for the nonlinear terms and Crank-Nicolson scheme for the diffusion terms. Size of computational box: 2*pi x 2*pi x 2*pi. Initial spectral distribution: E(k) = (0.54**2/4.12) * k * exp(-k/4.12) Error in continuity equation: not applicable. Computer: HITAC-S820/80 at the Computer Center of the University of Tokyo.
